PLAYing Around with the Hump Day Hops!

Spring? It's spring? Then why the heck are the temps nearing 90? This is NUTS! Good thing there's the Hodgepodge and Chats on the Farmhouse porch to PLAY with to keep my mind off this ridiculous heat!

Why did I capitalize and bold the word PLAY? Because I signed up for the NaBloPoMo this month and the theme is PLAY. On Wednesdays, I PLAY with these two hops! You can still sign up to PLAY along! Just click the button on my sidebar!

First up is the Hodgepodge. Just scroll on down if you're looking for the Chats!

1. My daughter2 is graduating from university this month and plans to teach elementary school. What are three qualities you most want to see evidenced in a teacher?
  • Understanding
  • Unassuming
  • Compassionate
2. You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat their pets.

3. What song makes you think spring? None. Because there is no spring this year. Just like there was no winter. However, there is something that does remind me of spring. I laughed so hard I cried the first time I saw this. The next day was Sunday and one of the preacher's (he was a new guy) daughters was singing that day. She's a first soprano. And let's just say that there might have been some people who were making a big deal out of her being in town and singing a solo (I didn't say anything about it being her mother)...when she hit that high note in her song, this popped into my head and I shook the entire pew trying to contain my laughter. And I wasn't alone. The lovelies had the same thought. Oh my.

4. May 1st is Mother Goose Day...share your favorite nursery rhyme.
I love Baa, Baa Black Sheep because my grandmother used to sing it to me when I was little. I remember like it was yesterday- I would sit on her lap and she would put her arms around me and do a little hand thingy while she sang. I would hold her hands while she moved them and I thought that was so funny.
I wasn't all that happy when I took Children's Literature in grad school and was told about the political implications behind a lot of the rhymes. Sheesh. :)

5. What makes someone unforgettable?
Well, there are people who are unforgettable due to their being a squeaky wheel- we probably remember them in order to avoid them or, like our neighbors on one side-due to their continual public drunkenness. We'll never forget these neighbors. Or that witch who taught me in second grade---I have never forgotten her and would LOVE to see her again just to let her know how horrible I still think she is.
Then there are those whom we remember with fondness because of their kindness or because they possess some other positive character trait or because they made such a positive difference in some small way that touched your heart.

6. Should music and/or art be part of a well rounded education?
I'm not discrediting the positive influence the arts have on education, but I'm not sure we need to have it like we do in the elementary schools here. Art and music are special area classes. It's not that they aren't worthy classes but, with all the budget cuts/funding issues, I have to wonder if cutting these in elementary school might not be the way to go- at least for the time being. When I was in school, our teachers incorporated music and art into our curriculum. Once we hit middle school and high school, art and music were classes in their own rights.

7. What social situations make you flustered or nervous?
Anything that involves a room full of people I don't know. I'm not a fan of meeting new people and I totally suck at making small talk. Oh, and having to speak in front of those people? That's a hell to the N.O.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
I cannot believe I signed up for May NaBloPoMo. That means I have to post every day during the month. Wow. Here we go again. If you want to give this a try, it's not too late. Just click the button on my sidebar!

You have plenty of time to enter to win a quart of Tropical Traditions Gold Label Coconut Oil! Just go to yesterday's post which you can find HERE.

Here are our questions for today:
  1. Who do you go to when you really need someone to talk to about something important? I have a friend from way back in my college days with whom I can talk about anything. Anything at all. Anytime at all.
  2. How often do you grill food outdoors? A good bit in the summer time just so I don't have to use the stove/oven and heat up the house which is already hot because the summers are BRUTAL
  3. What's the interior color of your car/truck/van? Black. Just like the outside! Not too smart for living in the low-country but she's so pretty!
  4. What's the last great buy you got? My last order with Tropical Traditions (I buy my coconut oil from them). No joke! Free shipping and a doosy of a sale on the things I needed! WooHoo! I know. I need to get out and shop more. :)
  5. What's new? It's summertime HOT outside already. We are approaching the 90s every day this week. Which SUCKS! Especially since we never got a winter around here. Quick, somebody turn down the heat!

  1. I know I can't blog every day this month due to travel and multiple events on the calendar. Good luck with it though!

  2. Joyce- I know what you mean. Next year is our big May graduation month-one undergrad one grad. That's going to be fun. All we have this month is a wedding and two birthdays! Slow month. LOL The NaBloPoMo is every month so you can always join in during a slower month!

    MKM- Indeed they are!

  4. Will it get hotter as the summer goes on? I have always wondered that about the low country. I always thought I wanted to live there.
It is so nice you still have a friend like that from college. That is nice.
You know that picture in your side bar with you and your girls when you just have brought one home? I have one almost like it. It cracks me up every time I see it. With all your little blessings standing around.

  5. Kimberly- Thanks! Enjoy the HOT temps? I don't think so girl. LOL

Kim-The highs this week are average highs for JULY! They are predicting a middle of the road for the summer but I'll believe it when I see..feel...it. We do see a lot of days in the mid 90s but our biggest problem here is the humidity. And that's what kills us! It's hot AND we can't breathe. They were so excited about a new sister! You know, I never wanted sons and the lovelies never wanted brothers. Now, I have the best SIL in the world and the two that have boyfriends have FANTASTIC ones! We are now blessed with boys! LOL

  6. The story behind "Ring Around the Rosy" is just awful! I too was a bit upset to learn more about some of the rhymes.

I love that part of Shrek! I would have been sitting beside you laughing too :)

  10. LB- Thanks! On both counts! LOL

  11. Looking forward to your everyday posting challenge - again!
I used to be afraid of roomfuls of strangers - still am, actually. My trick is to go up and introduce myself to someone who looks friendly. It gets me attached to a group and then it's easier to talk to others. I have a hard time convincing people that I am shy. Really, really shy.

  12. I'm sayin' girlfriend. I kicked in the air in March this year...that's never happened.

I have to confess though many of those days I ran the furnace and the air the same day. We always have quirky weather.

I loved readin' you wonderful answers!

God bless and have a fantastic day!!! :o)

  13. Stephanie- Thanks! I think that's why I love blogging- I enjoy meeting people this way. But in person strangers? Not so much. I think I just told you that I'm strange. LOL

Nezzy- I wish I had had to use the heat this winter but I didn't. At least not very often. Of course, that made for easy electric bills! Thanks!

  14. I don't think I could commit to doing a post everyday! It looks like if we had a gathering of Wednesday Hodgepodge people no one would want to get up and speak !

  15. Debby- LOL That's true! I guess we'd all just sit there and stare at the floor. :) Joyce would probably speak though! And that would get the rest of us started.

  16. I love your story to #3. I was laughing with you. I love Shrek and I laugh through that scene every time.
The stories behind nursery rhymes and fairy tales can be horrific. I think I'm glad I don't know the background behind them, I'm sure it would ruin it for me.

    Have a lovely evening. :)

  17. Janyce- Thanks! We still laugh when we think about that day! And when we watch Shrek.

  18. Most of the nursery rhymes have a story behind them. Not all are that pleasant. I do find it interesting to read about the history of them.

  19. I read all your answers, but I can't seem to get past the free shipping on Trop.Traditions! Me want!!!
I'm glad you're back after the A-Z. I missed my weekly dose of EmptyNester!

  20. Tami- I know. It was a shocker to me in grad school to find that out. I much prefer to think they are simply nursery rhymes.

Patrice- I'm glad to be back! I figured out how to incorporate the Chat in the NaBloPoMo! Did you enter the giveaway? If not, I'll just include you in the drawing from here.
