Hodgeness of the Podgey Kind

Or something like that! Regardless, it's a fun thing to do and y'all really should join in if you don't already!

1. Noah Webster was born this week back in 1758....besides the online version, do you own a dictionary?  Do you ever use the hardback copy or is your hunt for a definition strictly online these days? IF the computer is on and I'm on it, I look up words on dictionary.com. IF the computer is not on I either look it up in my hardback copy (or my paperback copy) OR, if I'm really feeling lazy, I just change my word choice. There are probably about 7 or 8 dictionaries sitting around our house.

2.  Should public schools ban Halloween celebrations?  What about other holiday celebrations currently under fire?  Nah. We have a good time and the kids enjoy themselves. The teachers plan around holiday themes- and they include most if not all holidays-so we see all kinds of art work and writing all over the school. The parties are limited to the late afternoon on the day of the holiday or the last day before school closes for the holiday. Some of the grade levels have turned the celebrations into centers and the students travel from room to room to participate in the games, which are all educational. So far, this is working out well in our area.

3.  What's your favorite 'dog' movie? I think I like MY DOG SKIP best. Seriously, I try never to watch dog movies. I cry and cry and cry at every stinkin' one of them. And by cry, I mean SOB. I tried to put a clip here for those of you who haven't seen this movie. But I couldn't. I watched less than 30 seconds of it and started crying.

4.  When were you last somewhere you'd describe as 'too quiet'? Monday, during the orientation I had to attend, it got really quiet a couple of times when the AC wasn't running. You know, that kind of quiet when you can hear things you don't want to hear like someone's stomach growling. Yeah. It was getting close to lunch time. I was hungry.

5.  Are you a neat cook or a messy cook?  In other words do you clean as you go or make a big mess and then deal with it later? I used to be a messy cook but that got old real quick. Now, I get everything out and put it away as I use it. Than, all that's left is the washing. I like that better. Of course, I still make a mess. It's just more of an organized mess. If that makes any sense at all.

6.  Did you hear about Felix Baumgartner, the skydiver who broke the sound barrier via parachute?  Was your first thought  COOL! or was your first thought CRAZY!  Are you adventurous? My first, second, third, present thought was/is- What an idiot. I'm not adventurous. At all.

7.  What's not a word but should be? I can't think of a single one of those words I use at school when I can't use the word I want to use, if you get my meaning. I can think of a slew of words that shouldn't be words. Until Joyce asks that question in which case I won't be able to think of those either.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.I still have laryngitis. I've had it for 7 days now. This is long enough to learn how to spell laryngitis correctly without looking it up. For 3 days, I couldn't talk at all. It's funny how all my students whisper now and so do a lot of the adults I communicate with. I've done the gargling and the steam breathing and the hot tea with lemon and honey and the waterwaterwater. I just don't have time to rest my voice. Now I'm getting a little freaked out that I might do some real damage. If you have the magic cure- PUL-EASE share!

It's HUMP DAY! Let the Friday countdown begin!

  1. Two things: 1. People should just live and mind their own business with regards to holidays that others choose to celebrate. The pc thing drives me nuts at times. 2. My choice of a new word would be "eleventy-seven" to describe a boatload of whatever.

  2. Resting your voice is really the answer. Hope you're feeling better soon!

  4. JB- When dealing with little kids, I would much rather include all or not do it at all. I don't like to leave any kid out of a celebration. Like 'eleventy- seven'!

Joyce- I know. But that's hard to do when I have to teach 9 classes every dang day. I've tried to use creative ways of communicating and the kids love it but I'm just really frustrated now.

JP- Hahahaha! When the lovelies were little, they enjoyed this. But the kids at school are great! They've been whispering. LOL

  5. I think the parties are fun for the kids. My children always enjoyed those party days. My Dog Skip is the only movie I ever saw my husband tear up at! I'm like you when it comes to cooking. Feel better soon. They do say to eat a large marshmallow for a soar throat on Pinterest. Maybe it will work on your laryngitis, can't hurt to try it.

  6. Debby- My kids did too! That movie is so good and yet, I never want to see it again. :) Really? A large marshmallow? Might have to give it a shot. Like you say, it can't hurt to try. :)

  9. Reading Marley and Me just about did me in so I avoid any type of dog movies/books these days, but maybe we'll see about My Dog Skip. That does "suck" with the laryngitis; I hope you recover quickly from it. I had a doctor dictate a report one time who had laryngitis; she whispered the report; just about drove me crazy trying to figure out what she was saying.

I like the school parties for the holidays. The kids' elementary school they were going to up in Montana (this is years ago) decided that each class could only have one party a year so the class had to decide between what holiday they wanted to party for. I thought that was a bit hard to deal with because you could have a first grader celebrating Halloween but the fifth grader's class isn't, but is celebrating Valentine's Day, which would cause siblings to be a bit jealous if they didn't have a party. Consistency is the key I think, especially with kids who are always looking to see what is fair and what is not.

  10. I don't watch too many dog movies for that same reason, I start crying right away. Any excuse I can have to not teach, I'll take it, even if it's Halloween :)

  11. Oh, I remember that movie - so sad! I also cried while reading THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN. I am a true mush. :)

  13. Oh so sorry you lost your voice. I really hate it when that happens.
    I wish I had a magic cure.
I like your answers today. You know when that guy jumped out of the deal and when he broke the sound barrier we could hear it. My future SIL, his Mom was there so she was pretty excited. She is a aviation nut. So she was going crazy on FB watching it.
Well have a really nice week.

  14. Rest your voice...don't even whisper! Hot tea and honey? That's what I always use. I agree with your thoughts of Halloween and holidays. I hope you feel better soon!

  15. Wish everyone could just enjoy each other and celebrate!
    Big Sigh (:

I hope you have a chance to rest your voice and feel better soon :)

  16. hoping your voice comes back. When that has happened to me in the past (lasting 2-3 days) I sounded much worst than I felt. I think I scared a few people.
I enjoyed following that edge of space jump and I think it was educational - in other words - do not attempt this at home.

  17. Hope your laryngitis clears up soon!

  18. I never use a book dictionary any more; the only dog movies I ever saw were Lassie Come Home and Old Yeller; and teachers need all the holidays they can get for themed work.

I am a clean as you go cook since I cooked in a very cramped space for almost 20 years. Teaches you good habits very fast. My chef son also cooks this way.

Hope you can rest that voice enough over the weekend.
