"Hey, are you guys going to be around tonight? I wanted to stop by for a chat. ;)
See the little winky at the end?
I sat there not knowing what to do! I checked with the husband but he's sort of a weird bird. He thinks he's being rational and calm but, in all honesty, what he does is rob me of the moment. SO----
I
I stepped out of my door and waved about like a maniac until I got my friend's attention in the office. She came running. (Because she thought I was having an emergency that involved students NOT one that involved a text message.)
She agreed with me that he was going to propose. And so did the 10 other teachers who saw the text.
I left school 20 minutes early. But 5:30 was still HOURS away.
I was about to bust wide open! The husband tells me to "not blow things out of proportion yet. They might be coming over to tell us they're getting another dog."
Really? Sometimes, men are just stupid.
So, instead of keeping it all to myself I told DoodleBug. We danced the dance of joy! We jumped up and down and squealed! And then I told her to "Shhhh! He can't know that you know."
Sometimes, I am stupid too.
Anyway, Evan showed up 30 minutes EARLY!!! And it went like this:
DoodleBug (running all around the house): What should I do? I can leave now, he'll see me!
Me: CRAP! I don't know! Go to your room- I'll tell him you're napping!
DoodleBug (runs into her room and closes the door and then opens it and yells) Talk real loud!
In walks Evan.
Idle chit chat. Idle chit chat. Idle chit chat.
Husband sits down.
Me (looking at Evan): Ok, spill it!
Evan: OK. Well, I just wanted to come by and ask y'alls blessing to ask Birdie to marry me.
Me (before he really gets the whole thing out of his mouth and while jumping up and down and hugging him) YES!!! When are you going to do it?
Evan: Tonight.
DoodleBug (busting out of her bedroom, runs into the living room yelling-) Tonight?! You're going to ask my sister to marry you tonight?!
He told us how he asked Birdie's bestie (they've been BFFs since they were 3 years old and everyone calls her my dark haired child) to help out and they had joked about her hiding behind a tree and taking pictures and then popping out.
We thought that was a great idea.
So DoodleBug and I went too.
And, no. I wasn't able to keep this news to myself. I called my dad, my mother, Breezy and Deanie!
Everyone was very good about keeping it a secret. Birdie had no idea!
They went to Waterfront Park, downtown Charleston, way down on the pier after going to Improv with friends. And, no. This is not unusual. Birdie is a Charleston girl. She's always up for a walk downtown. She loves this city.
Even with 20-25 mph winds.
And three homeless people sitting around. (Which would be my dark haired child, DoodleBug and myself.)
DoodleBug was lying down on one of the swings and, as Birdie and Evan walked that way, Birdie says, "Don't go over there. There's a homeless person trying to sleep."
After he proposed, Evan tells Birdie, "There are some people here to see you."
Birdie: What? People?
Evan: Don't worry. You know them!
That's Birdie and her Bestie (my dark haired child) in the picture above.
And that's the happy couple!
OH! She said, "YES!"
And now- a favor---
I'm about to host a contest. We have to come up with a name for him. Breezy's hubby is BestSonInLawEVER and he is quite protective of his title (even though he ADORES Evan) SO it's time to come up with a name for our second son-in-law.
Start thinking about it now! I'll put the contest up soon!

Stephanie- I agree! It's a cute story and they are such a 'made for each other' couple. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI was smiling as I read this. It's wonderful the joy an empty nest can bring at times ;).
We will be having our 3rd wedding this summer as my #1son marries. The daughter's weddings were emotional enough....can't imagine the emotions during this one!
Congrats to all of you!
Yaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy!
ReplyDeleteWonderful news, thrilled for you all.
I've just re-read Pride and Prejudice, and thought nothing could beat the proposal there (Elizabeth's reaction is just epic!), but this does come close.
Really made my day, this did! Your family are beyond funny.
Congrats!
Yay!!! So happy for you all!! I am like you and cannot keep it to myself either! We have had the 'men' ask us too and I can hardly contain myself. :) Congrats to the whole family.
ReplyDeleteDiane- We are, without a doubt, a crazy family. FULL of nuts from a long way back. LOL Did you know that DoodleBug is coming to Europe in two weeks? Stuttargt, Zrich, Paris and Amsterdam! So exciting!
ReplyDeleteBetty- You can come! I would LOVE it! I think I should send out an open invitation to all my blogging buddies! :) This will be the second one for us. So, two down, two to go. Yikes! LOL
Alessandra- Thanks! We are all so excited! He's so awesome and they were just made for each other!
Deb- Aren't they though? LOL You're too funny! Notice how I saved myself by saying I can be stupid too? Ha!
Julie- It was so awesome! We are all still so excited! Figuring out his nickname is going to be fun!
Cindy- This is our second one and I feel a little better since I know what to do and expect. But it is still emotional, you're right about that! Congrats to your son!
Mimi- Thank you! I appreciate you using funny instead of crazy. LOL We are so ready to have fun with this one. Now that I've been through one, this one seems easier.
Melody- It's just too hard to keep good news, isn't it? Especially when it's not only good but exciting too! Thanks!
